About Us

The Virginia Children’s Book Festival team is a group of dedicated volunteers that works tirelessly to bring opportunity to every child, regardless of circumstance. Founded by Juanita Giles and Katie Snyder in 2011, the VCBF has grown into the largest children’s book festival on the East Coast. In addition to providing our centerpiece festival free of charge, the VCBF donates thousands of books each year, established libraries at juvenile detention centers, operates a mobile READcart, provides programming for children with special needs, produces an annual mural project, and more.

The VCBF is part of Eleven Pictures, LTD, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Your donation is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. We acknowledge no goods or services were provided to you in return for your contribution.

What We Do

The VCBF is so much more than our annual festival. For more information on any of our initiatives, please contact us at

Book Distribution

Our main book distributions occur during the holidays, but we spend the entire year donating books to organizations, social services agencies, and more.

Special Needs Programs

In partnership with Longwood University’s Speech, Hearing, and Learning Services, the VCBF produces programs tailored to children with sensory sensitivity and other special needs.

Our mobile READcart is available for events in and around Farmville and bring reading to children and families wherever they are.

Hip Hop in Children’s Literature

The VCBF is dedicated to innovative and exciting programming, and our Hip Hop in Children’s Literature brings it all by combining reading, music, and video to create a singular experience for teens.

Technology and Reading Initiative

By combining reading with robots, Minecraft, Google Expedition, and more, the VCBF is dedicated to creating a dynamic programming that will inspire children to dream bigger.

Civil Rights in Children’s Literature

In partnership with the Robert Russa Moton Museum, the VCBF is proud to present annual Civil Rights in Children’s Literature programming in honor of Barbara Rose Johns, and her dedication to education for all.

I just am so thankful you started this festival – I know it’s a huge effort but for these kids in central VA, it’s so amazing!

-Mary Jane Cook, teacher

“As an author and illustrator, I travel to many book festivals around the country every year, but I have never experienced anything like the VCBF. One child who received a free book through the festival told me it was the first book she’d ever owned.”

-Sophie Blackall, two-time Caldecott Award winner

“Thank you for putting on the book festival, and thank you for making it free. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done”
